What is Sandes app? Government’s Own WhatsApp: Everything You Need to Know


Indian government launches an alternative to WhatsApp and other messaging apps called Sandes. It has been launched by NIC-National Informatics Centre. The new Sandes app is integrated with the existing Government Instant Messaging System(GIMS), which is developed for government executives with a WhatsApp-like communication application. For sign up, it requires a number or government email id. After sign up, users can use this app for text messaging, create groups like on WhatsApp, and can also send multimedia content such as images, audio, video, etc.

Sandes which stands for “message” in Hindi states it uses end-to-end encrypted communication like other major messaging applications. This app can allow users to send and receive messages to share images, videos, and audio to contacts. Users can shares contacts and group chats feature is also available. Like WhatsApp users can also broadcast messages or can choose certain messages as their favorite.

How to download sandes app?

To download sandes app you have to go through the government’s GIMS portal. It is available for both Android and iOS users. It can run through on android 5.0 and above. For iOS users, it is available on the Apple app store. And it supports iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch minimum of iOS 12.0 is required.

How to sign up for sandes app?

After download the Sandes app, you can sign up through your mobile number or email id. The app will then send you a six-digit one-time verification OTP on your number or email id for authentication. Please note that email IDs are restricted to the government IDs only so if you try to signup with a Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or any other email account, you will see a notification that emails from that domain are restricted. Even government-related email accounts like @mygov.in are not accepted. The official @gov.in can be used for creating an account on Sandes app. So, the second option is you have to use your mobile number for registration.

User can also update/edit its profile or select your status while signing up on Sandes app. This works similar to WhatsApp profile status.
